Lip Lessons & Illusions
Lip colour instantly dresses the lips, brightens the eyes, and adds a spark of liveliness to the face. Light and lovely… bright and bold… dark and dramatic… and is the singular easiest way to update your look at any time of the year. Lip gloss is always glamorous alone and layered - dawn to dusk. The mouths appeal in any makeup design will vie for the prize or tie in with the eyes. A great smile will always get the attention regardless of what colour is on the lips.
The lip illustration shows you how to augment the size, shape, and fullness of your mouth and helps to achieve lip symmetry. To make your lips look their fullest, follow the ridge (4), the invisible "ledge" that surrounds the mouth, shown with a dotted line. For a natural and smaller mouth, follow the vermillion the visible border where the lip colour meets your complexion, shown here in a solid line. Maintain balance and symmetry by beginning at the natural outer corners (3) work in towards the center plum line (1) and to shape the peaks of your Cupid’s Bow (2).
Application Tips
• Always begin with clean and moisturized lips. Blot excess lip balm with tissue.
• Apply Luxe Gloss alone for the easiest and prettiest lip look.
• For more lip definition, dimension, longevity, and prevent feathering - begin with the companion lip liner pencil. Follow the guide above.
• Fill in the whole mouth evenly with lip pencil. This step works well alone as a matte finish look. Apply a light layer of lip balm for more smoothness, moisture, and subtle sheen. Layer Luxe Gloss for volume and attention.
Blush Strokes
Blush is a very versatile cosmetic that can be used on the cheeks, lips, and eyes. At its simplest and most beautiful, cheek colour lends vitality to the face—from a subtle blush for day, to a stronger flush for evening. Here’s how I show clients how to keep their cheeks in check.
As illustrated, the cheek area is composed of three distinct planes, I refer to as The Blush Zone: Dotted Line 1, between top of the ear and corner of the nose, is the highest and softest diffused edge. Solid Line 2 runs parallel from the middle of the ear down to the corner of the lips to form the bottom edge. Blush application is equal width between ear and apple. Dotted Line 3, the vertical line from the centre of the eye, indicates the inside edge of the apple of the cheek. This is where blush fades and finishes in front the smile lines (nasolabial folds). Pretty Powder Blush is applied within this cheek graph on a 45-degree angle that flatters and lifts all face shapes and sizes. https://www.dinodilio.com/ddb-makeup-shop/ddb-pretty-powder-blush-fake-oh
Let me teach you my blush approach that softly enhances the face with colour while simultaneously sculpting the cheek bone and brighten the eyes - only using blush. Always smile when applying your blush, even when you’re alone! Place a thin pencil or long handle of a makeup brush along blush line 2 (the bottom line). Hold this in place with your less dominate hand at the ear. This is your guide until you master the technique. Load and prepare your Multi-Angle Blush Brush. https://www.dinodilio.com/ddb-makeup-shop/multi-purpose-angle-cheek-brush This step pushes the colour into the belly of the brush to prevent colour over-load and ensures a smooth application. Swirl the brush to pick up colour. Burnish it onto paper towel. Repeat for more saturation. Begin parallel to the ear and within the blush zone. Without lifting the blush brush, sweep brush back and forth along the top of the pencil/brush guide, from ear to apple until desired. Remove pencil/brush guide. Whisk the brush in a circular buffing motion to blend and diffuse edges, staying within the zone. Fade colour out at inside edge of the apple of cheek at Line 3.
Repeat for more intense evening-hour elegance. The result should resemble a checkmark or swoosh formation—natural and flattering, smiling or not. To soften a heavy-handed application, gently buff over the zone with a dry wedge sponge, a clean brush, or give it a touch of face powder to temper and tone down.
Tips: Apply a whisper of blush across closed eyes for a hint of something special. Add a touch to the tip of the chin for tied-together radiance. On days when you feel too pooped to do your makeup, just apply a bright pink or peach-toned blush on the apples of the cheeks for a pleasant pop.
The Marvy
Mascara Moves
Most people put the focus on the tips of the lashes to make them look their longest. My approach is the opposite and one I learned while studying makeup in San Francisco on the very day an 8.6 earthquake hit. You could say this technique is earth shattering.
https://www.dinodilio.com/ddb-makeup-shop/ddb-sensitive-mascara
With a good-quality mascara, a skillful hand, and precise application this intricate way of putting on mascara is the foundation of impressive eye definition – all on its own. The heavy dense deposit of mascara along the base of lashes causes the roots to connect creating an elegant discreet liner that defines and projects the beauty of your eyes… all with one product.
Notice how the technique defines and beautifies the left eye as compared to the right eye that looks disconnected and unflattering.
Here’s how: Hold the wand horizontal to your lashes and carefully place and push the wand deep into the roots (the base of the lashes) with a firm but gentle motion. Hold brush here and slightly rock the brush, as it rests against the lash line. Wiggle and jiggle the wand side-to-side to deposit maximum colour in three sections; the inside end from tear duct to inside edge of iris, the middle between the edges of iris, and the outside end from edge of iris to end of eye. Rotate the wand and repeat in sections.
Next, push the wand up and through the tips to lift and curl. Gently push the tips back and hold the wand in place for five seconds to set and extend your flutter appeal. Want more lash lushness? Move the tip of the mascara brush vertically through each lash, up and out in the direction they grow, (towards the nose at the inside, straight up in the middle, and up and out towards the ear).
Use a spooley /mascara brush to separate any clumps, refine and achieve a wispy look. For bottom lashes, aim the wand’s tip vertically at the roots and use a crisscross action to colour and lengthen. Finish with the same technique used for top lashes to direct and place bottom lashes. Place a spooley brush under and behind lashes and roll the brush forward. Tip: Brand-new mascaras often have too much mascara on the brush, which can make the application messy. Lightly wipe the sides and tip of the wand with a tissue to remove the excess.
Elegant Eyes
Forget eye shadow entirely and draw attention to elegant brows and defined eyes with this simply stunning threesome. It’s starts with well-groomed eyebrows that frame the eyes and provide distinction and expression to the face. Strive for graceful brows that flatter the face, rather than take it over. The best eyebrow shape, placement and colour can make a surprising difference!
The eye diagrams below divide and identify key points and zones of your eyes that form easy-to-follow frames of guidelines to use when applying, blending, and matching eye makeup. As illustrated, eyebrows are comprised of three distinct points using vertical and lateral dotted lines.
A = The Head of the Eyebrow / Inner Eye Frame: Fullest part of brow. Vertical line of the nose.
B = The Arch: Highest point of the eyebrow. Diagonal line intersects wing of nose and pupil.
C = The Tail of the Eyebrow / Outer Eye Frame: Tapers to a fine point. Diagonal line from outer eye to wing of nose.
Remember; Eyebrows are sisters, not twins.
Don’t obsess over matching them exactly.
This is what gives your face its own unique character.
Application: Take your eyebrow product colour cue from your actual colouring—somewhere between your natural eyebrow and hair colour. If you treat your hair, the eyebrow shade should match or harmonize with that colour. For daywear, with a light hand, fill in and enhance only the sparse areas of your eyebrows with the Precision Brow Stylist. Work in straight direct lines from A to B to C to establish a natural flow from its thickest start from the head to arch/apex then tapers and ends to a fine thin point at the tail. Not pelts please! Unify and finish the whole brow shape with the residue colour left on the brush.
Tip: Always use this indispensable Spooley/Mascara Brush on the opposite end of the Brow Stylist to complete and finish. This makes the difference between fake and finished brows. Brush upwards moving at a 45-degree angle to unify and lift eyebrows. Refine shape and edges with cotton swabs. Seal in place with Clear Brow Set/Groom Gel. Lay down long brow hairs that surpass the top of the eyebrow lining up between the brows head and arch and arch and tail.
Precision Brow Stylist
The super-fine tip allows you to create hair-like strokes to spot-fill sparse areas, cover white and silver hairs, soft enhancement, boost body—and create the perfect tail. Built-in spooley brush is ideal to smooth, refine, and finish.
